Domino's also been doing things like database replication long before the Microsoft DAG came along. In short, think of the Domino platform as many different parts of the Microsoft platform all rolled into one (Mail, Database, Web, Development, Sharepoint, etc). Some All of the slickest workflow and document management capabilities I've seen are in large Domino shops. It's actually a wonderfully capable platform, but like any large platform, requires a large amount of staff to actively develop and support it. The brand appears to be dead at IBM (and even IBM is going through some really rough times). So in short, don't put any effort into learning up on it. You'll still see it in some bigger Fortune 500 companies, but most are in the process of migrating away from it. My liver is still recovering from the abuse Lotus made me put it through.īasically, it's a legacy carry-over piece of software from the 90's. Plus it works well and integrates with a lot of the newer MS products. Much easier to learn, implement and work with compared to Lotus. If you are a relatively new SysAdmin I'd recommend instead going after learning Exchange 2013. They were still using Lotus for a thousand other things. I know because the last job I was at was a huge company (think one of the top Fortune 5) that was as of 2 years ago just finished migrating over to Exchange 2010 across their entire company for email. That being said the problem with most Lotus envs I've seen is the software has never been upgraded and the company is so ingrained in using it that you'd have an easier time with a CryptoWall infection than migrating / updating it. Lotus works great because it has been around almost 30 years. Lotus Notes = Outlook & Domino = Exchange Server would be the easiest comparison to make. You will either learn to hate it or after a decade of administering Lotus become a wizard spoken in hushed voices in the IT department. Lotus Notes is the Exchange/Sharepoint/Lync/OneNote/etc of the business world that was around 25 years ago and has yet to die off.
